
First and Second class visited Glengowla Mines as part of their school tour. They learned all about the work of a miner 100 years ago and about the different minerals found in the rocks.

First and Second Class visited Aughnanure Castle in Oughterard for their school tour. They had a great time exploring the different rooms, learning about life in the Middle Ages and looking out for bats!

The children played music at the Kinvara Farmer's Market. They also entertained the residents of Kilcolgan Nursing Home with their songs and tunes.

Deirdre came in to the classrooms to show us how to prepare some of the herbs and vegetables from our garden. We had some yummy salads.

Eimear's class travelled to the Aviva Stadium where they were awarded a prize for the KETNS submission to Show Racism the Red Card. We are super proud of the children in Anna and Eimear's rooms who put together an excellent submission.

A year at KETNS could not be complete without a disection under Mary's watchful eye. This year the children looked at earthworms.

Nóirín Burke from the Salthill Aquarium visited the classrooms to explore some of the many marine creatures living on our shores.

Ruijun Hu a Chinese flute player and calligrapher came to share his skills with the children as part of our Chinese New Year festivities.

Chinese calligraphy on chinese lanterns was the focus in Eimear's room for Chinese New Year. The other classes made fantastical dragons some of which are still on display.

First and second class explored sound and made their own instruments. Here are the string instruments. There were also percussion and wind instruments.

To help them understand what life with a disability might be like, the children explored the senses and the loss of one or more of the senses. They looked in detail at the life of Helen Keller.

Jessie the Barn Owl from the Burren Bird of Prey Centre at Aillwee Cave, Ballyvaughan, Co. Clare paid a visit to Kilcolgan Educate together National School, to the delight of staff and pupils

- KETNS took part in Ireland’s annual School Game Playing Day. Students had fun playing games while also raising money for the local charity, Voices for Galway.

- ‘Please sir may I have a little more.’ The children loved the porridge on offer at our breakfast morning.

Just some of the wicked witches who entertained the residents of Kilcolgan Nursing Home. Many thanks to the Nursing Home who invited the whole school for trick or treating.
School Year 2009/ 2010

- The children had a salad using lettuce, radishes, rocket and edible flowers from the garden. They used chives from the garden mixed in with cottage cheese on crackers. They have also been out weeding in preparation for the Summer Fair.

- The children celebrated International Day where the different nationalities from the school were highlighted as well as some more.

- Junior infants, senior infants and first class visited Kilcolgan Castle where they had a tour of the castle, the farm, saw the bell and of course had lots of fun on the grounds.

- Pony rides were only part of the attraction. Big thanks to Karen, Tony and Orla for a memorable day.

- And the chess tournament begins! Chess club is run by one of our parents for the children during break on Thursdays.

- Peter Lochmann came to talk to the children about dental hygiene. The children then checked their own hygiene by using disclosure tablets which stained plaque in their mouth blue!

- As part of the Science Outreach Programme, Applied Optics scientists visited the children in Eimear’s class.

- The children visited the nursing home and entertained the residents with a selection of Irish songs.

- As part of Holi (the Hindu spring festival of colour) the children painted each others faces. Hindus throw coloured powder and water at each other at this time.

- Junior Infants learned all about birthday celebrations around the world. Here they are smashing their pinata.

- On the first of February the children learned all about St. Brigid and made crosses out of rushes. See our display on the stairs.
- Eimear’s class proudly raised over 90 euro for Haiti. Well done everyone!

- Even teachers go to schoool! Mary organised science training for teachers on a Saturday and we came back to school to test our thinking skills and experiment with scientific concepts. The course was very kindly run by Lorraine McCormack who is undertaking her PhD in CASE (Cognitive Accelaeration through Science Education)

- Eimear’s class took us to the Caribbean for our End of Term Concert and brought us back home with some seasonal songs played on the fiddle.

- A special visitor came to talk to the children

- Anna’s class made a paper maché Frosty the Snowman

- Eimear’s class visited Telegael and TG4 and the children had a chance to read ‘An Nuacht’

- The mayor visits our geology stand at the Galway Science and Technology Festival. Well done to the teachers and children for a great display!

The children enjoy some board games as part of National Board Game Playing Week and raise money for local charity 'Voices for Galway' in the process.

A maths trail around the school was also part of maths week. In this photo skills in algebra are tested as the children create a pattern as outlined on a challenge card.

As part of maths week the children in Eimear's class visited the other classrooms to play maths games with the younger children. Great fun was had by all and of course there were plenty of learning opportunities.

As part of the themes 'food' and 'harvest', the children in Anna's class baked brown scones to share. They also made their own butter. Because it was maths week too, they learned all about measuring and weighing looking at lots of different scales and carefully measuring out ingredients.

A giant shark is only a small part of our 'Sense of the Sea' art exhibition which is part of the Clarinbridge Arts Festival. Do visit the school to take an adventurous trip to the underwater deep.

The children enjoy their lunch in our sukkah. A big thanks to Aoife and Philip for their help with the building of it.
