Christmas Fair cancelled – a message from the Fundraising Committee

It was a huge disappointment to have to come to the decision to cancel the up-coming craft fair.  The decision was based solely on the unprecedented levels of rain.  We had a number of outdoor stalls which we would have had to cancel and numerous stall holders coming from Dublin, Roscommon, Mayo and the south of the country.  With the number of road closures increasing and the Gardai in Gort expecting more floods in the area we decided it was not possible to go ahead with the fair.

We took the decision to cancel it completely rather than downscale it to a cake sale on the basis that the same level of work would be required from the parents (baking, etc) but without the same amount of customers.   We are looking at the possibility of holding a similar fair in February/March.

We have some fabulous raffle prizes and will be organising a raffle in the school in the next week.  Keep an eye out for details.

A huge “Thank You” to all the parents who gave up their time and effort for the fair and we look forward to your continued support in the coming year.

Students to take part in Galway’s Science and Technology Festival

Eimear’s class are busy preparing for their participation in Galway’s Science and Technology Festival which takes place in the Galway Bay Hotel and Leisureland on Sunday 22nd November.  They will be hosting an exhibit on geology and much credit and thanks is due to Aoife who is helping to prepare them.  A visit to Trácht recently consolidated much of the learning taking place andthe children found many interesting geological samples.  If you can spare some time to call in and visit them throughout the day they would be only too happy to show off their knowledge.

You can find out more about the Galway Science and Technology Festival on http://www.galwayscience.ie/

Friday 23rd (this note went home in schoolbags)

On Friday 23rd October our school will be taking part in National Games Playing Week which runs from 23rd – 30th Oct.  Children are asked to bring their favourite board game to school on that day.  Information and tips for enjoying board games in the family can be found on www.ngpw.ie.  We are also using the day as part of our Learn Together curriculum and are asking children to bring 2 euro with their board game.  As this activity is part of our Learn Together programme we would ask children to donate the 2 euro themselves, maybe from pocket money or a piggy bank.  Otherwise the children might be asked to earn the money by helping out at home.  Money raised on the day will go to Voices for Galway, which is part of Down Syndrome Ireland.  This is a voluntary group which receives no government funding and which provides invaluable speech, language and occupational therapy for children in the Galway area with Down Syndrome.  Our school will receive six free board games for taking part in the event.

Friday is also our Halloween concert day.  Please send children to school dressed in their Halloween dress up clothes.  We will start our concert at 1.00pm.  Everyone is welcome and we hope to see you all there.

Yom Kippur, Rosh Hashanah and Sukkot

Shortly we will be exploring the Jewish festivals of Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur and Sukkot.  Here is some information that may give parents a background.  If there are any DIYers among you who would like to help us build a sukkah, we would be most grateful.

Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur and Sukkot are known as the three pilgrim festivals, which celebrate the exodus of the early Jews (or Israelites) who Moses led from slavery in Egypt.

Yom Kippur is the most solemn day in the Jewish calendar.  On this day people ask for forgiveness for their sins of the previous year.  Adults fast for 25 hours.  The end of Yom Kippur is signalled by the sound of a ram’s horn called a shofar and families enjoy a meal together.

Rosh Hashanah is the start of the Jewish New Year.  Symbols of Rosh Hashanah are the shofar and apples dipped in honey to symbolise a sweet new year.

Sukkot falls four days after Yom Kippur and is traditionally a harvest festival, and a chance to thank God for what he has provided throughout the year.  Jews mark the festival by building small huts made from natural materials.  This kind of shelter is called a sukkah and has at least three sides and a roof which is partly open to the sky.  The huts are built to last seven days during which time Jewish people might live in the huts (or eat in them if the weather is colder).  If we build a sukkah we hope that the children might eat their lunches there.

Swine Flu

No doubt you have heard that Swine Flu is spreading in Ireland.  As children are returning to school soon there is a responsibility both with parents and schools to try and prevent infection.  Being informed about the virus and how best to prevent the spread of it is the first step.  The HSE have published guidelines both for parents and schools.  Please click on the following link and read it carefully before you send your child to school.

http://www.hpsc.ie/hpsc/A-Z/EmergencyPlanning/AvianPandemicInfluenza/SwineInfluenza/EducationalandChildcaresettings/File,3900,en.pdf

The school will provide hot water and soap for the children to wash their hands regularly.  Children will be encouraged to wash hands in the morning when they arrive andfrequently throughout the day.  The school will also have tissues available to catch sneezes.  We understand that the snivels are common among chilren and will not ask children to stay at home if they appear to be otherwise healthy andhappy.  However please do not take offence if a teacher asks you whether you are sure you feel your child is well enough to attend school – we are simply trying to ensure the health of our school community.

Finally please keep an eye on the school notice board (upstairs) when we return to school as updates and information on swine flu will be posted there.
