First Class

Fáilte go Rang a hAon

What's the weather like today?
We looked at how weather affects people in many different ways. We kept a weather chart and recorded our findings. We noticed that is was sunny and cloudy most days with very little rain. We have high hopes for a hot summer :)

What is Rust and how does it work?
First class investigated how rust forms and how it affects everyday objects if they are not looked after properly e.g. bicycles. We left the nails in the water and salt solution for a month and then compared the rusted nails with unused nails.

Mixing Materials

SEPTEMBER 2013

Welcome to First Class.

September is coming to an end so lets see  some of the things first class have been getting up to in their busy first month back to school…

MYSELF
First Class talked about their bodies, named their body parts and discussed how they worked.
We drew around one another and labelled the diagram.

Similarities and Differences

We discussed how we are all different and unique. We read the stories ‘Elmer’ and ‘ All Kinds of Bodies’.  We looked at similarities and differences such as eye colour, hair colour, height and appearance.  We also discussed our likes and dislikes, talents and abilities which help to make us unique and special.

Picture
We listened to the poem ‘The Box of Crayons that Talked‘ and created our own first class box of crayons

“We are a box of crayons, each of us unique
and when we get together the picture is
complete
“

Picture
We then used all of the colours in our
crayon box to create our own unique pictures
.

Colour Mixing

First class had lots of fun mixing primary colours red, blue and yellow to make green purple and orange.

They also mixed white and black to make grey and white and red to make pink. And they were really surprised to find that when you mixed all of the colours together you made brown!
They then used the colours they had mixed to recreate Kandinsky’s masterpiece
‘Squares with concentric circles’

Fruity Friday

Picture
We have been learning about how to stay healthy by eating healthy food and doing exercise

We looked at the food pyramid and discussed how it is important to eat a balanced diet. One type of food we said we should eat as much as possible each day was Fruit and Vegetables.

We had a special shared lunch at the end of the week in school called Fruity Friday. YUM!!

Tap Tappety Tap: 1st Class Parade

Picture
First class made their very own percussion instruments and put on a parade for 4th class performing the rhythm ‘tap tappety tap’.

IF YOU WANT TO SAY HELLO AROUND THE WORLD… HELLO!!

Picture
It was European Day of Languages on Thursday 26th September. First Class talked about where their families were from.  We learned how to say hello in different languages from around the world and made flags to represent each language we knew.

Why don’t you try to say hello in some of these languages

German: Guten tag     Polish: Czech     Russian: Pryvet
