Sports day 2025- Some of the highlights are depicted below. Additionally the children enjoyed hockey, basketball ball, an obstacle course, tug of war, skipping, a water race, a jigsaw race, tic tac toe relay style and lots more.

Second class below busting some dance moves with our talented dance teacher Laura. Laura is a parent at the school who kindly volunteers her time during Active Week. Each class enjoyed a dance session with Laura.

Well done 6th class! Our 6th class play an active coaching role during Active Week organising games for Junior and Senior Infants and coaching soccer and hockey for 1st and 2nd class.

Tri hero’s were out in force for day 1 of Active week! Pool sessions, cycle sessions and a cycle through the woods were enjoyed by our senior classes today.

Day 2 of Active Week kicked off with a soccer session for each class in the school by coach Emma from klaskicks. The kids were all very engaged and enjoyed all the mini games too.

Day 3 of Active week began with another parent volunteer Derek and his helpers giving rugby sessions to all our middle classes. Our wonderful SNA also provided an Athletics session with a focus on speed walking with fourth class.

Thanks to our Parent volunteer Eoghan who took fourth class on a cycle around our beautiful woods and reviewed some safety skills too.

Sports day was a wonderful way to finish Active week. Soccer, basketball, races of all sorts, obstacle courses, water and jig saw relays were just a few of our fabulous activities today.

Sixth class organised an obstacle course and skipping challenge for 1st class and 3rd class.

It was wonderful to have a soccer coach visit our school during active week. We played games and had a mini World Cup!

Active School Week 2023


Soccer sessions for 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th and Senior Infants. Skills and mini games in the sunshine!

Water relays combined with math’s activities were enjoyed by 1st class this week. An especially suitable activity for this hot weather!

Rounders for 4th and 5th class was a great success. It was a new game for many of the children and incorporates so many skills.

Junior and Senior infants had lots of fun participating in tennis lesson this week. A great opportunity to learn racket and striking skills.

First to sixth had a super sports day. Stations of hockey, basketball, competitive races, target throwing, tug of war and skipping were just some of the activities enjoyed by all today.
Infants sports day was a huge success. Target games, parachute activities, water relay, jig saw relay and all manner of races were enjoyed by all.

Second class had a poster competition to highlight what the children had learned from the PAWS water safety programme. Well done to the winners! Second and third class also took part in the ‘Swim a mile’ relay event in our local pool as part of ASW.

Our 6th class playground leaders took on coaching roles and created games for the infant classes during Active school week.

Obstacle course fun with our SET teacher Ciara. Our SET team always take on coaching roles during Active School week with a variety of classes across a variety of activities.

Each class took part in Hip hop dance classes as part of Active school week.

Active school week is off to a great start with the daily K being run at little break each day. This is organised and monitored by the Active School Commitee.

Sixth class showed great leadership skills as they coached playworxs sessions for Junior and Senior Infants

Second class showed great team work during their soccer skills session with Jikke.


Our pupils were very lucky to have a visit and badminton session with Tony Crowley who is off to represent Ireland in Croatia. We wish him the very best of luck!

Leadership skills were evident amongst our 6th class pupils all week. Below are some pictures of them coaching basketball to 1st and 2nd class.

Parent volunteers pulled out all the stops for a fun filled obstacle course for Junior and Senior Infants!

Teamwork during Active week was at an all time high with many classes working together and learning from one another. Junior infants teamed up with 4th to practise their skipping skills.

We love making use of our beautiful suroundings during Active week. Below are pictures of our Junior Infants enjoying our local playground.

Parent and sibling volunteers facilitated a great afternoon of Gaelic football. A first for KETNS and senior infants, 1st and 2nd class really enjoyed it.

5th class out exploring the new trails in our surrounding woods while engaging with the Outdoor and Adventure strand and creating some woodland creatures along their way.

Great fun was had with our wonderful Hurling coach David. David kindly did sessions with our 5th and 6th class who hot a chance to brush up on some skills.

​Second and Third class proudly took part in our Swim a Mile activity in conjunction with Swim Ireland-swimming a mile in a relay! 
The best way to start off Active School week with a morning of Zumba for our Infant classes. We are so lucky to have such talented parent volunteers.
Active School week got off to a great start with Unihoc sessions for 3rd, 4th and 5th classes with Helen.

Soccer skills for 5th and 6th with Patrick was a great way to finish our first day of Active School week

​Third Class Swim a Mile Relay Challenge!

Second and Third Class also took part in Swim Ireland's 'Swim a Mile' relay Challenge in our local swimming pool. They received swim hats and certificates for their efforts. Well done!

Sasha, Alice, Roibin, Liadh and Caelin all worked so hard this week. They are the senior members of the Active School Committee but  this week they really stepped up their game to be the coaches, referees, organizers and motivators behind our Active School Week.

Our Friday Blitz Day!

A beautiful sunny day for our afternoon blitz! Classes 1st to 6th were split into teams of varying ages and abilities and each team got to participate in Hockey, Basketball, Soccer, Olympic Handball and Dodge Ball. These games were all refereed by our Active School Committee members. The emphasis was on fun, teamwork and inclusion without a scoreboard. Their excellent behavior even earned them some free play at the end of the day. A perfect way to end Active School Week!

Senior Infants and First Class Rugby

Senior Infants and First Class each had a session with one of the Connacht Rugby coaches.A very enjoyable and active afternoon was had by all!

The Daily K

 The Daily K has been run each day at little break during Active School Week and will continue next week. We are using our Active School Walkway as signposts for the Daily K. Each time the children run a kilometer they receive a sticker and when their running record is full (10km) they can earn a homework pass. The daily K has been monitored daily by our 5th and 6th class Active School Committee. 

A Very Special Guest!

Maggie's uncle Mathew came to visit each class in the school. He is a wonderful athlete who won two gold medals and one silver medal in the recent Special Olympics in Abu Dhabi. Mathew won these medals for his sport Bocce. The children got to see Mathew's medals, ask questions about his sport and congratulate him in person for his amazing achievement!

Junior Infants had a wonderful time at their dance class kindly given by Áine, one of our lovely parent volunteers.

First Class and Fifth Class Summer Scavenger hunt

Our Fifth Class and First Class joined together to take on a scavenger hunt challenge in our beautiful local forest. Each team had to find various signs of Summer and record their findings through photographs using our school i-pads.


Fifth Class Hurling session

A fine day's hurling for 5th Class with our local coach David. David also gave a block of hurling sessions to 3rd class earlier this year and the sessions were enjoyed by all.

Great start to Active School Week with Badminton!

A super start to our Active School week with one of our lovely parents Karina taking Junior Infants, 4th Class and 6th Class for badminton sessions in our local hall. Junior Infants started off with balloons before moving onto shuttles!
