Welcome to 1st Class
School Tour!
We had an absolutely fantastic day on our school tour at the Slieve Aughty Centre. We went for a walk in an Enchanted Forest, made our own fairy doors and learned about the relationship between humans and nature. We all had so much fun and want to say a big THANK YOU to the staff at the Slieve Aughty Centre and all of the parents who volunteered to help us for the day!
Tonight, You Belong to Me. Performed by First Class
As I'm sure you already know, First Class is full of some extremely talented boys and girls. But have you heard what beautiful singers they are? Here they are giving a fantastic rendition of "Tonight, You Belong to Me" accompanied by their teacher Anna Mc on her ukulele.
April and May in First Class!
We have been so busy since our new teacher Anna Mc joined us in April. Here are some of the many things we have been up to...
- To celebrate Spring turning into Summer we made some beautiful Cherry Blossom paintings.
- 5th class joined us to help us learn about Procedural Writing. They helped us to write instructions on how to make jam sandwiches... and then we made some yummy jam sandwiches to eat together!
- We made butter in Science by shaking cream until it turned into butter! Then we ate our freshly made butter on crackers. It was delicious!
- We took part in National Spring Clean by working together as a school to make sure our school grounds are kept nice and litter free!
- We made amazing self-portraits of ourselves blowing bubble-gum to go with some more procedural writing we did in class!
- We had a class concert where lots of our talented classmates performed live music for the class.
- Lilian’s mum came in to our class to tell us all about sea-bed mapping! It was so interesting!
- We learned all about Space and made UFO’s in art and learned about forces in Science by making Balloon Rockets out in the sunshine!
- And, as always, we had loads of fun in maths using concrete materials to learn about fractions and dividing things equally in half.
Whew, I bet you’re tired after reading all of that! Keep an eye out on the page for more updates about our super class. :-)

"Weight" til you see what's been floating our boats...
This week we've been learning all about Travel in First Class and we've been covering the topic of Weight in Maths. We decided to put these two things together in a super Science experiment. Our teacher Anna challenged us to make a boat that could float and hold the weight of 6 marbles! We were all given the exact same materials but we had to come up with our own design and make our own boats. (We used foam sheets, tinfoil, straws and tape)
We had loads of fun designing our boats and even more fun when we got to test them out! All of our boats were able to float but not all of them could hold the weight of the 6 marbles. We learned loads from discussing why they did and didn't hold this weight. At the end we decided to see which boat would hold the most weight, and one of our designs held 22 marbles before it finally sank!
In Maths we really enjoyed investigating balance and weight by using some home made scales made of a hanger, wool and plastic cups.

ALIEN INVASION!
Visitors beware! There has been an alien invasion in our classroom here in First Class! We spent two weeks learning all about Space with our teacher Anna Mc, and a group of aliens must have heard because they've taken up residency on our roof! So far they seem quite friendly and have not posed any threat to our super class. What planet did they come from? How long do they plan to stay?

Road Safety Workshop
On April 14th we went to a very fun and interactive road safety workshop called the RSA Street Smart Show! We learned all about how to be safe on, and near the road. We practiced everything we learned on a huge street set up complete with a mini village, roads, zebra crossings and traffic lights. At the end of the workshop we were given our very own Safety Licences which we will be using to make sure all of you adults are being safe road users. Remember, buckle up, make sure we have a booster seat and drive safe!

Spring News from First Class!
First Class sprung into Spring with Genevieve and learned lots about life cycles, new life and Fair Trade. The place was alive with cress seeds, sunflowers and even butterflies growing in our little classroom! Van Cough was an inspiration for us to create some beautiful sunflower paintings. We celebrated St. Patrick's Day, had a visit from a parent who told us all about the Solar Eclipse and we had very successful Student Lead Conferences too!
