2nd Class Met a Real Guide Dog!
Meet Gallagher! He is a fully trained guide dog who can assist people who are visually impaired. He showed us lots of very clever tricks.

We explored our local trees
2nd class took a trip to Coole Park for National Tree Day. They looked at the types of trees that grow there and made rubbings of the leaves to help to identify them. Later on they ate their lunch in the walled garden and played some games. The children wrote about their experiences in Coole Park and drew pictures.

We Celebrated Halloween

We carved a pumpkin! The children loved the sweet smell of the pumpkin as it was being carved. We looked at the seeds as we scooped them out and then carved a scary face. We learned about the Jack O' The Lantern tradition! Then we had a Halloween party and played some Halloween games.

Music in the classroom

Our very talented cello players Lia and Kaelan treated us to some music for show and tell. They told us all about their cello lessons and how much time they put into practicing every day. Lia and Kaelan also played for us during our school's Christmas concert on the 18th December along with our very talented tin whistle players! Well done Guys! We are very proud of you.
Jumping Clay
We had a visit from the folks at Jumping Clay for Science Week
It was not all fun and games. Our friends in jumping clay showed us how our body is made up of millions of cells. We learned all about the different parts of the cells and how they function. We learned the names for the different parts of the cell.

Show and Tell
Karina showed us a beautiful picture she painted for show and tell. Karina got the inspiration for this painting when she went on a camping trip with her family in Europe. We are very impressed by her talents!

Cake Sale for Children affected by Typhoon Haiyan.
Our wonderful school put on a delicious cake sale. The chief masterminds of this great event were the 4th class children and their teacher Sorcha. Our very talented children and their families cooked up a huge array of scrumptious treats. Due to their fantastic team efforts we raised nearly €600 to help children affected by Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. Well done guys!!

Galway RNLI
We had a visit from a local "super hero"! Kieran Tolan is a volunteer Helmsman for the local Galway Bay lifeboat service. He is also responsible for training of the new RNLI recruits. Kieran talked to us about water safety and the role of the Galway RNLI in keeping people safe. He showed the class some of the equipment they use including their specialised dry suits, life jackets and helmets.

The Water Cycle
Badminton
Joshua's parents Derek and Annette came in to teach us badminton. Everyone really enjoyed the weekly trips across to the gym and by the end of our training sessions everyone had picked up lots of new skills. A big thank -you from second class!!
Birds in Winter
During December we learned about our local native birds. We all became bird spotters and made surveys of the birds that we could spot in our own gardens at home! We spotted robins, starlings, sparrows, blackbirds, blue tits, great tits, finches of all sorts and even a few song thrushes!
We know that finding food in winter can be difficult for small birds so learned how to make bird feeders out of lard and birdseed. We put our feeders up around the school and the birds were very happy indeed!

Fionnuala led our wonderfully talented musicians in carol singing for the local community at the Kilcolgan Steel Tech Christmas event!

Chinese New Year
For Chinese New Year we learned all about Chinese history and mythology. We made Chinese dragon masks!
Kaelan's lovely Grandmother Karen, very kindly came in to visit. She told us of her fantastic travels in China. She showed us a great power point presentation and some beautiful artifacts. Karen also gave all of the children fortune cookies. Yum, Yum.
Fantastic Tales
Karina showed us the amazing book she is working on. It is about a magical fairy kingdom. She has written and illustrated it beautifully. Sarah read some of it for us. We can't wait to read it when it is finished!
We Visited the Engineering and Bio-medical Engineering Departments in GMIT
Fleur's father Patrick took us on a tour of the Engineering department in GMIT, where he is a lecturer. Fleur's mother Ruth also very kindly came along to help us out. It was such an exciting day.

Holi is celebrated in Northern India and by Hindus and Sikhs worldwide.
Holi is celebrated during the March full moon and celebrates the planting of crops and the end of winter. It is marked by bonfire lighting and throwing coloured powder. It is a playful festival and a time when people celebrate family and friendship, forgiving old foes.
