Fáilte go Rang a Trí
Welcome to 3rd Class
Our Local River
Thank you so much to John, Karina's dad, for teaching us all about the amazing life to be found at our local river. It was really interesting to learn about all the conservation in the area, the life cycle of the Sedge/Caddis fly and see how anglers often make their own hooks to mimic the flies and insects.
KETNS Sports Day
Sports day was super! I’m so proud of 3rd class for displaying such great sportsmanship. They really encouraged each other, had a lot of fun and tried their best at all activities. A big thank you to Sorcha, Declan and the Parents Association for all their organising.
Our Terrific Tour
We sailed the Shannon in a Viking boat and had a terrific day out on in Athlone.

3rd class have so many different interests and talents
Recently we've learned from each other about fly fishing, playing the guitar and the cello, collecting annuals, hip hop dancing and how to care for a dog.
Do you know where chocolate comes from?
Darel brought us in a cocoa pod. It was really exciting to open it up and look inside. It wasn't quite what we were expecting! The pink bit was sweet like lemonade but the brown bean was really bitter.
How to Make Bubbles!
First we read an instructional text on How to Make Bubbles by mixing water, washing up liquid and, the surprise ingredient, sugar!
We tested out how well we followed the instructions with some very impressive results!

Next we made our own instructions for Junior Infants to follow. We used the Book Creator App on the iPads so we used lots of pictures and voice recordings. It was great to see the infants learning from our books and so much fun to blow bubbles with them!
Collaborative Chalk Art
We've been planting seeds
The Celts
Click here to play a game and learn lots more about the Celts
Procedural Writing
Our writing genre this term is Procedural Writing. We will be writing lots of instructions. First we are getting familiar with lots of texts that tell us how to do things.
Here we are following the recipe How to Make a Summer Smoothie - Yum!
Our Student Led Conferences
We are so glad our families could come in to celebrate our learning with us!
Winter Wonderland Art Exhibition
Our Winter Art Exhibition was a great success. Thank you to the parents for all their hard work in creating such a magical setting for our art work. We all really enjoyed the evening.
Here is a closer look at the identity silhouettes we made.

Groovy Graphs
We’ve been learning about Data in Maths recently. We carried out a survey on children’s favourite sports from 2nd class to 6th class. What do you think the top 3 were?
Soccer, swimming and dodgeball!
Then in groups we made some groovy graphs of our own. Topics we wanted to find out about included favourite films, sweets, seasons and video games. Check out our results below!

Preparing for our Winter Art Exhibition
We are busy preparing for our Winter Art Exhibition on the 12th December from 6 – 8pm in Kilcornan Hall. Here is a sneak preview of some of the art we are preparing.
A big thank you to Cindy Lund for her inspiration and to Molly’s parent Maeve
and Alan for their huge help with these projects. We are looking forward to
seeing them displayed on the night!
Microscopes - A Whole New World
Lillian and Ruairí’s parents organised for some high tech microscopes to be loaned to the school. It was so interesting to see everyday things up really close. We all chose different things to look at. Grains of sand looked like shiny jewels and one of the most startling things was seeing our own fingers and skin in a new way. The microscopes were also very useful when we were studying the soil in our school garden. We saw an earthworm like never before!
Estimating and Measuring Capacity
Oíche Shamhna Shona Daoibh!
Chuaigh muid go dtí rang Fionnuala chun amhráin oíche shamhna a canadh.
Bhí spóirt agus spraoi againn!

These desiccated frogs and lizards were amazing to see up close during show and tell.
Student Council Elections
|
3rd class really care about their school and want their voices to be heard. Karina and Conor did a fantastic job last year. This year Seven children put themselves forward to be our class representatives on the Student Council. They made campaign posters and gave elections speeches to their peers. The class voted for one boy and one girl, learning about the democratic process, polling stations and ballot papers along the way.

The results were extremely close but we are proud to announce that this year's 3rd Class Student Council Representatives are....
We want our classroom to be...
We are Historians
What’s your first memory?
How do you know about things that happened before that?
(Like where you were born, when you learned to walk or got your first tooth)
Historians are detectives who find clues or evidence that tell us about life in the past.
This evidence comes in various forms such as
Pictorial evidence
Oral evidence
Documents
Artefacts
3rd class have been showing evidence of their past to the class.
This 3rd class student wore this artefact when he was a baby and he's been told his mum wore it when she was a baby too!

This boy brought some pictorial evidence and documents, including a map and an old SKY t.v. bill, to prove he lived in another house until he was 2 years old.
Shanah Tovah!
Look what we can do when we work together!
We have been investigating the power of magnets.
We're also getting very good at organising things into alphabetical order. This skill helps us to use dictionaries and atlases and become more independent in our learning.
