Mystery in the Library
Fáilte go Rang a Cúig
2021/22
Fifth class finished out the year with a Murder Mystery Day. It was a regular day in literature with Aladdin, Robin Hood, Cinderella, the Queen of Hearts and all our favourite classical characters when it was discovered that His Majesty King Henry VIII – had disappeared! Which of our characters was behind this dastardly deed....and why?
Forest Faces
School Tour to Wildlands
We have not been on school tour for the past two years so we were very excited to head off on a bus to Moycullen to Wildlands Adventure Centre. We were very brave and took the leap for the Zip 'n Trek, we also got to do Fun Walls climbing and Archery.
Circular Economy Workshop with Ramona
Ramona came in to talk with us about the circular economy. This is how many times we can use something before it is actually just waste. We learned all about sustainability, global projects (like new Adidas trainers made from mushrooms!) and sustainable materials like using banana plants for making rugs, cactus plants and pineapples for making jackets. She brought many resources to show us how we can be more sustainable in our own homes. We are very inspired!
Buddy Reading with Senior Infants
Posh Day
We had a stupendous day, enjoying the finer things in life. We made cucumber sandwiches to enjoy with our Afternoon Tea. Magnificent!
Valentine's Day Disco
Celebrating Imbolc
St Bridget's Day Crosses
Sharks and Minnows (and basketballs)
We have been developing our dribbling and shooting skills in basketball through drills and games.
Fish Dissection with a Fishery Scientist
We were very lucky to have a visit and fish workshop with Gabriel's father, Eoghan. He is a Fishery Scientist and recently returned from a research trip. He was on the Celtic Explorer, a group of scientists, students and one master fisherman went to sea, in the Atlantic Ocean for ten days. They were doing a ground fish survey. Eoghan showed us pictures and explained all about his recent trip. Eoghan brought back with him whitings, box crabs, mackerel, Atlantic flying squid and a little shark. It is hard to sleep on the ship because it rocks a lot and when it goes over a wave it feels like you are falling! They eat some of the fish they catch. Sometimes there are very interesting differences in the fish and sea creatures because they are not in an artificial breeding ground - we saw photos of a giant prawn!
We dissected the flying squid and observed the mouth and beak, the funnel, the gills and opened up the mantle. We removed the pen (gladius) and the eyeball. Each of us got the opportunity to dissect our own fish either a mackerel or a whiting . We attempted to remove the ear bone, which can provide very useful information about the growth and age of the fish - these fish were about a year old.

SCCUL Sanctuary Christmas Card Competition
Well done to everyone in Fifth Class who worked hard and submitted some beautiful designs to the annual SCCUL Sanctuary Christmas Card Competition. They received over 150 entries [all high quality] from local school children from many different schools. After a very difficult job, their judging panel chose Gemma's design to be the runner-up. Well done Gemma!
On December 17th at 4.30pm, the 2,000 lights on the 25ft outdoor Christmas tree will be turned-on at the SCCUL Sanctuary. Lights can be sponsored for €5 each in memory of your loved ones both living and deceased. Each light on the tree will be specifically dedicated to one person. In return for sponsoring a light, you will receive a specially designed SCCUL Sanctuary Christmas card which can be sent to the person you are remembering or to a family member if the person is deceased. The lights will shine on the tree until January 7th 2022.

Science Week 2021
We had a very busy Science Week in Fifth Class! We focused on the theme of the climate crisis and learned all about the challenges rthat our world and society are facing. This week the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference was taking place in Glasgow. We learned all about Greta Thunberg and we worked in groups to discuss and share ideas for how we can take climate action.
We were very lucky to have been selected to take part in the Galway Science Festival Exploration Dome. The Exploration Dome is a Digital Mobile Planetarium and we watched a film, 'Dynamic Earth', it was a full dome film (360 degree). A Mobile Planetarium gives children a chance to interact with the planets and stars in our Universe. The film extended our learning of the climate crisis and its effects on all aspects of our planet.

Walking Water Experiment
We connected our learning of the colour wheel and colour theory in art with a sciecne experiment where we created our own colour wheels! Slowly, we observed the water creeping up the paper towel and dripping into the empty cups. As the colours mixed, we saw that we were creating secondary colours.
How this Science Experiment Works
The water moved up the paper towels through a process called capillary action. The paper towel is made from fibers and the water is able to travel through the gaps in the fibers. The gaps in the paper towel act like capillary tubes and pull the water upward. The water is able to move upward against gravity because of the attractive forces between the water and the fibers in the paper towel.

Bat Talk
We were very excited to have Dr. Raymond Stephens of the National Parks and Wildlife Service come into our class to teach us everything we ever wanted to know about bats. We spent the morning learning all about these wonderful mammals, debunking common myths (no, they don't get caught in your hair) and we got to use bat detectors. We got to see some dried out bats and hold them if we wanted to...a perfect start to the Halloween break.
Maths Week
This week we took part in a special workshop, organised by NUIG and led by mathematics educator Douglas Buchanan. Douglas is a seasoned mathematics educator who travels around the world hosting maths challenges and puzzling workshops. His aim is to make maths teaching and learning meaningful and appealing by keeping away from the textbook and presenting the subject through problem solving.
We solved various puzzles (card tricks included!) working in pairs and idnependently. We collaborated with our partner and stretched our mathematical skills. There was even some magic!

National Tree Day
National Tree Day was on Thursday 7th October. We braved the lashing rain to head out to our sensory garden and learn about the secret life of trees. Trees have a complex communication system beneath the surface of the ground - they communicate and cooperate through subterranean networks of fungi. They pay these fungi with the sugars they create during photosynthesis (one third of the sugars they make, they have to use to pay these networks for their service!).
This year's theme is 'Trees are Good Neighbours' – 'Is comharsana den scoth iad crainn'. Trees are some of our greatest neighbours and are so vital to our environment and our planet. We learned about Irish native trees - the Wild Cherry - also known as Prunus avium or Crann Silíní Fiáin –and we have our very own sapling to plant in the school grounds.

Cycle Right Safety Course
We started our Cycle Right safety programme. CYCLE RIGHT is a cyclist road safety training programme designed to give cyclists the knowledge and skills to move safely through the road system, an environment shared with other road users. We took bicycle and road skills training, mixed with theoretical and Rules of the Road instruction. Every Friday afternoon, we go on short, instructor-led cycles, guided and directed on correct positioning and decision-making. Richard and Leroy, our instructors are the best! We are learning how the techniques we have learned work on the road.
Minecraft Education Edition
We were so excited to start using Minecraft Education Edition on the school macbooks. We are taking part in an All-Ireland Challenge and learning how to use Minecraft and develop our learning across the curriculum. Not only does it develop our digital literacy skills, it also promotes speaking and listening skills and is a highly motivational learning tool.
Outdoor Data Handling
By Gabriel
On Tuesday we did data handling. It was a beautiful day. We were doing tally marks to see how many orange and purple flowers there were in the flower bed. There was twenty seven orange flowers and forty five purple flowers! It was a fun day.

Volleyball with Coach Lee
By Tilli and Cian
We have started learning about volleyball, We do it on Fridays. Last Friday, it was raining, a lot. Lee, the coach, was teaching how to spike, dig and volley.
Cian: Everyone in my group had named their volleyball! Mine was called 'Bal'. I thought all of the passes were quite tricky at the start. It will be good to practise.
Tilli: My favourite was 'digging'. You have to put both hands together, in an 'x' first. You hit it from below the elbow to the wrist. You have to put your thumbs together, side by side.

Shared Writing
Welcome to the new fifth class who have returned to school full of ideas and creativity; we started our first day back with our very first class story. In this shared writing workshop we explored the story elements and as a class we wrote the first part of an adventure. Students will decide where to take the story as they complete it individually.
The Adventures of Johnny and Pickles: Rise of the Dachshund
Johnny, the flying cat lives on the cold planet, Uranus. Johnny was busy devouring his favourite, big, blue bowl of flying cat food in his colossal, luxurious, igloo (which was really an ice mansion). Suddenly, a chunky, elderly, loud pigeon, with a monocle, elegantly crash landed on Uranus. How did he do this? He struck a pose mid-air, and then, as he crashed he, neatly landed on his manicured talons. He was also a very smart pigeon (who had graduated from the best university in the universe), and his name was, Sir Pickles III. The pigeon said... “Where am I? Wow...the misty air is very thin and blisteringly cold up here.” Just then, Johnny’s igloo collapsed on him! The pigeon shouted, “THIS PLANET IS IMPLODING!” After a second of recovery, Johnny replied, “No, no, that is just the troll throwing a tantrum.” But it wasn’t just a troll, it was....the diabolical dachshund...

Mica in the Woods
We learned all about therapy pets and in the afternoon, Mica the Labradoodle came for a visit! We took her for a dog walk in the woods and Brian joined us for some traditional Irish music. He had a tin whistle and low whistle. Everyone threw sticks for Mica, she was very excited!
Mystery in the Library
The other night in the library, when many characters were out of their books enjoying a sojourn in the night air, a crime was committed, grim and grave, right in our own library. As a result his Majesty Henry VIII – that famous monarch from the English history books – has disappeared. Gathered are the characters who were present in the library at the time of the nasty deed. Fortunately Master Sherlock Holmes is here to investigate, so the perpetrator of this heinous crime will no doubt be revealed as the night proceeds...
Digital Write-a-Book
For the last term, fifth class completed the Write-a-Book competition. Due to Covid-19, the format this year focused on producing a digital book. Each child worked very hard on producing their very own wonderful book, which was shared with other schools. Our young authors should be very proud of their brilliant creations. Well done!

States of Matter
We are learning about the states of matter in science. The three states of matter are solid, liquid and gas. We split into groups to show the particle model of each state. These particles could be molecules. We showed the arrangement, movement and energy of particles of liquid (picture 1), solids (picture 2), and gas (picture 3).
Fifth Class Demand Climate Action!
This week, each student in fifth class wrote a formal letter to the Taoiseach to demand system change to address the climate crisis. They asked that the government and media tell the truth about the climate emergency (and make it their priority). Here is a photo of all of the postcards that we posted!
Folk Art Forest
Everything is in full bloom in Fifth Class! We were inspired by the folk art of Jane Newland (illustrator of the fantasy book, "Pog", by Pádraig Kenny). We created our forest using mixed materials of watercolours and sharpies. As we created our art we listened to some famous folk music.
Next we will be looking at Folk Art Flowers, developing our techniques and using crayons as an additional medium.

We hope this warms your heart and reminds you of the magic and love that the winter season brings. Wishing you all a safe, happy and joyful winter break! |
Cycle Right Safety Course
We have had great fun in our cycle training - we have been training in cycling our bikes with skill and confidence. We learned all about road safety and developed our skills and understanding of how to keep safe on our bikes is all different environments.
November
One World Centre: Beyond Borders Workshop
Over two days, our class was very lucky to have the opportunity to take part in the Beyond Borders classroom workshops which were led by Vicky from the One World Centre. As part of our 'Learn Together' learning we used creative and participatory approaches to explore refuge and migration.
We saw an original evacuation suitcase, which belonged to Nora and it contained wartime items such as ration books, identity cards and vouchers. This helped us to explore some issues surrounding forced migration using the historical context of World War 1. We considered what items might be important to a child leaving their family, and home, and everything familiar to them, and why? And we discussed whether these things would still be important today. Using drama activities we explored the difficult decisions that parents and children have to make when considering evacuation and safety. We then used creative writing to write a diary entry from the perspective of an eight-year-old child, like Nora.
Our second workshop allowed us to explore data about migration visually. We examined our own preconceptions about migration. Over 80% of the world’s refugees are hosted in ‘developing countries’, and the ‘least developed’ countries are hosting a growing proportion. In addition to this, the vast majority of Internally Displaced People (IDPs) are also in the ‘developing world.’ However, this reality is very much at odds with the dominant narrative that assumes, incorrectly, that the majority seek safety in Europe or North America. We were able to see this narrative play out when we completed the activity, 'If the World was 30 people". Doing this activity challenged our misperceptions and we gained accurate information about where the majority of the world’s displaced people and refugees are hosted. It contextualised this situation and we were able to reflect critically on the impact of widespread misinformation and stereotypes.

Local Legends History and Art Workshop
It was cool. I just fell into the story and got lost in the art. It made my brain think and it made me happy. Isla
I really enjoyed doing the water colour. The story made me think of St Colman’s cave differently. Izzy
I really enjoyed the history part, it was interesting and I would love to do it again. The water colour and the sketching allowed your mind to wonder back to the stories. Lilleah
I thought it was really good because you are drawing history and your imagining what history was like. Ruairi
I loved the water colouring, I never did that before. When you mix the colours they look really nice. Nicola

Student Council 2020/2021
A massive congratulations to our two new student council representatives - Otis and Isla! Our class is in very safe hands and we know we can rely on them to represent and advocate for us. Well done!
Storytelling and Art Workshop
Fifth class were very lucky to have two special guests come to our classroom for a whole day workshop. Rory did a local legends story-telling workshop where we learned heard the tale of The Legend of St Colman and Bóthar na Mias. We learned the stories behind some local place names and reflected on the difference between the times of King Guaire (Dunguaire Castle!) and 2020.
Shona worked with us in the afternoon; we learned about sketching techniques, colour mixing and techniques for applying water colour paints. Inspired by the stories of the morning, we created watercolour paintings from our imagination.

Houses and Homes
We learned about different types of houses around Ireland and throughout the history of Ireland. We explored and discussed what the homes we live in tell us about our history and our place in society and how these can change over time. In art, we developed our fine motor skills and construction skills to design our very own cereal box city.

Student Council Elections 2020-21
Well done to all the students who took to the floor today to present their candidacy for the upcoming elections. There was a strong theme throughout of prioritising the environment and ensuring a safe, healthy and happy classroom during these times of Covid-19. We also heard some fantastic and creative ideas for activities and things that they would like to do during their time 'in office'. Well done - you all spoke fantastically, confidently and we would be very lucky to have any of you as our representative this coming year.

Outdoor Data Handling...to the woods!
On Friday we took our learning in maths outside to the woods. Each team was tasked with exploring the environment and finding data to collect. They then had to decide the best way to display this data. As you can see, there was a huge variety in the data we collected and lots of creativity in displaying this data. Some groups chose to create pictographs, while other groups did tally marks and 'bar (bark!) graphs'.
As the leaves are changing colour in Kilcornan woods, it reminds us that change can be scary, but it can also be beautiful. Returning to school in this new normal has been a challenge for everyone but fifth class have been working really hard to settle back in and enjoy school together...here is their Friday Leaf Party!
The new fifth class have returned to school with a bang and today we wrote our very first class story. In this morning's shared writing workshop we explored the story elements and as a class we wrote the first part of an adventure. Students will decide where to take the story as they complete it individually. Illustrations coming soon....
The Adventures of Eggman: Attack of the Toast
Once upon a time, there was an egg called EggMan who was watching his tv (which was actually a microwave) with his best sidekick, Spud. They were chatting about their mischievous plan to find Bacon, when the doorbell rang. EggMan tumbled to the door. It was the Postman; EggMan thought that perhaps he might know of Bacon’s whereabouts.
Suddenly, on Channel 2 they were talking about toast but EggMan didn’t hear because he was eating breakfast (scrambled eggs)at the door. The postman’s mouth fell open, his eyes widened…he was petrified to see Eggman’s cannibalism. The Postman turned, kicking the door out of his way and ran for his life. He screamed, “MUMMYYYYYYYYYYYYY!” EggMan looked up from his plate, confused. Maybe, he could order Bacon online, on E-baycon.
Meanwhile, the presenters on the tv were discussing how scientists have discovered how to bring objects to life, and unfortunately, have created Evil Toast (Evil Toast, a dastardly villain with red eyes and a top hat kidnaps bread and turns them into his toast army). EggMan was too busy demolishing his breakfast to hear this news but Spud was engrossed with the news story. Spud was horrified. He had to tell EggMan right away! He hopped on his hover board, which was made of sausages (he took a sneaky bite on the way). He ‘yeeted’ towards EggMan, skidding to a halt at his feet, and began shouting, “TOAST IS COMING!” There was a booming sound coming through the front door.
From the corner of EggMan’s eye, he saw…
A "dramatic" start to March.

Fáilte go Rang a Cúig 2019-20 |
Here in 5th class, we are kick starting the year with a project on Kilcornan Woods. We have been very lucky with the calibre of our guest speakers helping and guiding us long the way. From professional artists to some very knowledgeable parents, we are really enjoying researching all of the historical and geographical elements of the woods.
We had the pleasure of spending a full day with Gordan D'arcy. Gordan has many titles but the his best description of him is ''bird artist , author and matchmaker between children and the natural world''. We walked through the woods and he gave us a detailed account of the wonderful flora and fauna situated right on our doorstep. We returned to the classroom and were treated to an art lesson of the sycamore tree and the wood pigeon, both natives of Kilcornan Woods.
This week we were also visited by Joe Murphy, local historian and author. Joe recently republished his book on The Redingtons of Clarenbridge and has captivated us all with stories and facts about our neighbouring mansion.
Gráinne Baron from Burren Beo will be visiting us this week to consolidate some of what the children already learned in 4th class about the flora and fauna of the woods. We will check in again to update you all on our projects and we look forward to presenting our findings.

Gráinne Baron from Burren Beo will be visiting us this week to consolidate some of what the children already learned in 4th class about the flora and fauna of the woods. We will check in again to update you all on our projects and we look forward to presenting our findings.

Visit from a Syrian Refugee
We were very fortunate to receive a visit from a Syrian refugee last week. Having finished the novel 'Welcome to Nowhere' in our Literature Circle groups our interest in Syria and the refugee crisis was peaked. Mahmoud kindly agreed to join us to speak about life in Syria, his journey to Ireland and his new life here. He taught us how to write 'hello'('Marhaba') in arabic and we compared life in both countries. It was a very interesting lesson.
Buddy Reading
For the month of June 5th class have teamed up with Senior Infants to enjoy 'Buddy Reading' sessions.
Our Resident Space Expert
As we are learning about Space in Geography for the month of June we called upon our resident space expert, Hannah-Beth, to share her knowledge on all things galactical! Hannah taught us how to differentiate between star constellations and nebulae. We were super impressed with not only how her information was laid out, but her presentation skills also!
Thank you so much Hannah.
Thank you so much Hannah.
Buzzing about bees!
We had a visit from two local beekeepers today. Paul O' Brien, the President of the Beekeeping Association of Ireland, brought his mobile bee hive into our classroom and allowed us a chance to view the bee activity up close. We were delighted to have Paul share his knowledge with us.
School Tour
We went to Explorium, the national science and sports centre, in Dublin on our school tour. We had an action packed day exploring the science floor and all the STEM activities. We enjoyed a lightning show and explored the sensory room. The climbing walls were a fantastic challenge and we attacked them with enthusiasm and impressive perseverance! We finished the day with a live science demonstration which explored gravity and electricity. (We also managed to squeeze an ice-cream in on our journey back to Galway!)
Community Architects
In our maths groups we had to construct a 3D community according to given specifications...
Cell Explorers-Fantastic DNA!
Cell Explorers, a group of local scientist volunteers, came to visit us today for a session on DNA. We gained a basic understanding of the role and structire of DNA.
(If you put all the DNA in our body in one long line it could reach the moon and back again over 6000 times!!!)
We got to wear lab coats and perform a science experiment to extract DNA from a banana. We had to follow each step carefully and used pipettes and tubes.
Finally we built a DNA molecule to understand further the structure of DNA

Green Fingers!
5th Class have been busy little gardeners. Over the past two weeks we have planted tomatoes in our classroom and today we planted 4 bags of potatoes. We will watch and record their growth over the coming weeks.
Mighty Oak Certificate
Huge congratulations to Alice who is the first pupil in Rang a Cúig to achieve a certificate for the Mighty Oak Award.
Alice has been awarded 3 wow cards over the past few months for the attribute CARE.
Well done Alice-we are very lucky to have you on our team!
Ceolchoirm
Chan rang a cúig 'Amhrán na gcupán' sa ceolchoirm ar maidin. Bhí siad go hiontach!
History Talk
Local historian, and author of 'The Reddingtons of Clarinbridge', Joe Murphy very kindly came in to speak to us this week on the history of Kilcornan. We learned about Frances Xavier who married into the area with a very high dowry! She was a big advocator of education for the local people and it was fascinating to learn about the local landlords who once lived in our community.
Burren Beo Science Visit
Colm from Burren Beo visited us for a 2 hour workshop this week. We became geology detectives for the day studying the colours, texture and acidity of rocks found in Galway and the Burren area. We also had a chance to see and explore different fossils. We realised that with these rocks being millions of years old, Mums and Dads aren't as ancient as we once thought!
Mr Visser our fisherman!
In Geography we have been learning about fishing in Ireland. We looked in particular at the popularity of trout and salmon fishing in our rivers, lakes and oceans. With over 80 species of fish in Irish waters it is no wonder people enjoy fishing here.
Ethan brought in his 10ft rod and answered our many questions about fishing bait, equipment and techniques. Thank you Ethan!

Happy Valentine's Day!
We created Piet Mondarin inspired hearts to celebrate Valentine's day. He was a Dutch painter and one of the greatest artists of the 20th century, known for his abstract art and use of primary colours.
Tie Dye
With tie dye prints set to make a comeback in 2019 we decided to create our own pair of personalised tie dye socks!

Christmas Tree STEM Challenge
Using 6 cups and 6 pieces of string each, 1 rubber band and a whole lot of teamwork, we had to engineer a towering Christmas tree without actually touching any of the cups! Take a peek below to see how we got on...
We enjoyed a visit from some NUIG undergraduates today who came in to talk to us about ocean acidification.
The Earth & Ocean Sciences students taught us all about:
The Earth & Ocean Sciences students taught us all about:
- The PH of the ocean;how it's vital for our sealife that it doesn't continue to change,
- Pollution;how long it takes for rubbish to disintegrate,
- Food chains;how if even one animal is affected by acidification it has a ripple effect on the whole food chain
- What we can do to help our planet and save the future of our seas.
The children of 5th Class have been working together to create group projects on France. Their efforts in teamwork, research and presentation have been super impressive! Well done to everyone on fantastic geography work. Bien joué!
As part of Science Week we had our workshop with Naomi from 'Dr How's Science Works'. We investigated potential and kinesthetic energy with some interesting results!
We worked collaboratively in our groups to complete our latest STEM challenge and created 'Bone Bridges'.

Science Experiments
When water is added to the tablet the gas carbon dioxide is released. The pressure of the carbon dioxide gas builds up inside the canister until it becomes so great that it blows the canister from its lid. The gas rushing out of the end of the canister pushes it in the opposite direction. The ‘rocket’ can shoot up to 5 metres into the air.

What is a rocket? According to NASA it is a long, narrow, jet-propelled device or vehicle that is used as a signal or weapon, for fireworks, or to provide the power for spacecraft. http://www.nasa.gov/audience/forkids/glossary/index_r_s.html What does your dictionary say? Did you know? Rockets are used to send flares as distress signals, in fireworks and to launch spacecraft. Did you know? Fireworks are illegal, apart from licensed fireworks displays. Fireworks are dangerous and can cause accidents to people using them. They also upset blind people and dogs. For more information look up http://www.ispca.ie/behaviour/fireworks.html.
