December Aistear - The Post Office & Christmas
Senior Infants had a fun and festive time with our Aistear theme for the month of December;
The Post Office and Christmas.
The Post Office
We learned all about the Post Office and discovered how a letter or package can get from our home, to someone else's home anywhere in the world! We set up a Post Office in the classroom where we sorted letters and packages according to their destination. We weighed packages and decided how much the stamp should cost. We also sold envelopes and postcards, and you could even get your TV or Dog Licence, or order a new Passport. The Post-person was also kept busy collecting the post from the post box and delivering it to the houses.
Over in Small World we were busy with our DHL van, making sure the packages went to the correct house.
In the Sand Box, we explored weight and used weighing scales to see if we could get any of the packages to balance. We also explored which packages and boxes were heavy or light.
Finally, we had everyone's favourite station; The Writing Station! Senior Infants' writing has really come on recently and everyone was dying to show it off by writing letters, lists, Christmas cards, Thank You cards etc. The boys and girls loved practicing their writing and made such a brilliant effort it. We were all so proud.
Christmas
As Christmas edged closer, the Post Office was replaced with Santa's Workshop, full of busy elves making and designing toys in time for the big delivery on Christmas Eve! Over in the Sandbox we were very excited to find "snow" where we made snowmen and igloos and snowballs, or just enjoyed the soft feeling of the "snow". In Small World, we made a Winter Wonderland and in Arts and Crafts we used Potato Printing to make some beautiful wrapping paper.

Merry Maths-mas!
Here are some of our festive Maths activities from December!
We had to match some festive items with their corresponding number, put the correct amount of buttons on the Snowman to go with his hat and make some toys with the hammers, nails, shapes and cork-boards like busy little elves. Finally we made "Loose Parts Christmas Trees". Anna challenged us to use whatever we wanted from our Maths resources to decorate a giant Christmas Trees in small groups. Didn't they turn out lovely? But that wasn't the only challenge... after we finished our trees, the real challenge was to sort all of the resources back into their correct box without getting them all mixed up. We did a fantastic job of sorting and classifying all of the Maths resources. Anna was very impressed by our tidy up job!!

Snowglobe Art
Take a look at the lovely Snowglobe art we made just before we finished school for the Christmas holidays.
We used chalk pastels to design our snowmen and snowy backdrop before adding some "snow" and a lovely photo of ourselves. This was the closest we got to a White Christmas this year!!

A special delivery!
We had a very exciting visitor to our class yesterday! We have been learning all about the Post Office for December so Caoimhe's dad Joe, who works for DHL, came in to our class! Joe answered all of our questions about delivering parcels and helped us to learn exactly how a package can come all the way from Australia to Ireland in just a few days! Thank you so much for visiting our class Joe.
Our Christmas Tree
Here is our beautiful Christmas tree that will be on display across from the entrance from the school this Christmas. Senior Infants designed some beautiful stars and then made their Christmas wishes on the stars.
We hope you like our Christmas tree and wishes, and we hope you enjoy all of the other fantastic trees on display.
Well done to the organisers!

Beebots
Our school was very lucky to be given a grant to spend on technology so I jumped at the chance to buy some BeeBots - cute little bee robots that help us to learn some early coding skills.
Here we are trying them out.
We love our BeeBots, and we especially enjoy programming them to follow our commands and move around the classroom following whichever set of directions we tell them to do!

November -
Homes and Buildings
Our Aistear theme for November was Homes and Buildings so we divided the month up into three sub-themes; the story of The Three Little Pigs, the Building Site and the Estate Agents. We had a lovely student teacher with us for the month too. Here are some of the fun activities we got up to this November. A big thank you to Caoimhe's parents who gave us a lovely Wendy Houses to add to our Role Play corner. The children had a ball transforming it into so many different things depending on their imaginations!
The Three Little Pigs - Aistear
The Building Site - Aistear
We learned all about the work of the builder and the different jobs involved in building a house. We loved learning about some of the health and safety steps that need to be taken on the building site. We even had our own hard hats, high vis vests and safety harnesses, and we made sure to put on steel toe boots before we got on site! We also pretended to be architects drawing plans of houses so the builders could follow the plans on site.
The Estate Agents - Aistear
Finally we opened an Estate Agents with portfolios full of beautiful houses for sale or for rent; all designed by the boys and girls! The gang gave house tours of a very nice house for sale, they filled out application forms to buy houses and they negotiated deals for how much they would pay for a new house. We also learned all about the different types of houses, like detached, semi-detached, terraced, bungalow, apartment, house boat, caravan.
Field Trip around Kilcornan
We went on a field trip around the grounds of Kilcornan to look at all of the interesting buildings in our locality. We saw a historical house, a community centre, a swimming pool, a church and the school, of course! We really enjoyed identifying the different features of the houses we had learned in class.
Houses Art
Take a look at some of our fabulous creations from our Art lessons. We transformed brown paper bags into 3D houses one week. Then, the following week, we worked collaboratively with a partner to design and paint a modern style house using a cardboard box. We then arranged all of the houses into a cool colourful village, complete with street lights! Take a look below.
Happy Halloween from Senior Infants!

Halloween Fun in Senior infants
Senior Infants had lots of Spooky fun this week in preparation for Halloween!
In Aistear we had a Witches' Lair where we made revolting potions and made up our own rhyming spells. We also had a mini Haunted House, we dug for skeletons in the Sand Tray and we made some spooky creations in Junk Art.
In our Art lesson, we learned about mixing yellow and red paint to make lovely shades of orange and used it to paint some pumpkins! We did some ghoulish Halloween Science experiments and made our púcas float in the air and made corn magically hop around a glass of water!
We can't believe that we've already come to mid-term! We hope you all have a safe and happy week at home.

Amazing Autumn
Here are some of the lovely activities we enjoyed while learning all about Autumn. From trees, leaves, nuts and seeds, to weather, harvest, hibernation and migration. Here is a nice poem we learned.
Autumn Leaves
Autumn winds begin to blow,
Coloured leaves fall fast and slow,
Twirling, whirling all around,
Until at last, they touch the ground.

Humans and animals have five senses - sight, hearing, touch, taste and smell. Our five senses give us information about the world around us and we use them everyday. We carried out an experiment to see if we could still guess what a food was without being able to see it. We relied on our senses of touch, smell and taste instead.
