The Isolation Room
Understandably there are questions and nerves around a child being taken into the Isolation Room. Hopefully some of your questions are answered here. I will make a video as soon as I can so that the children can see the steps too.
When will you take a child into isolation?
We will remove a child from their classroom if they complain of feeling unwell, if there are concerns that they are running a temperature, if they have a cough that they cannot keep under control (i.e. that doesn't go away after they have taken a drink/ had some fresh air or taken their inhaler if this is relevant).
Where will they go?
Anna or a teacher from the support team will collect your child. They will be wearing a mask. They will ask your child if they can wear a mask too. They will give your child some tissues for if they need to cough or sneeze and a small bag to put any used tissues into. They will go to Anna's office or the support room in the red building. They will have their temperature taken using an infra-red thermometer. They will phone one of the child's parents. If they don't get a reply they will phone the other parent. If they don't get a reply they will phone the emergency contacts. They will open the windows in the isolation room and close the door. They will keep a distance from your child but talk to them and reassure them while they wait for the child to be collected.
In the meantime, the class teacher will place your child's belongings in a refuse bag, tie it and leave it outside of the isolation room for collection by the parent.
In the event that a child presents with difficulty breathing we will contact an ambulance.
Does my child need to get tested?
We ask that you seek medical advice if your child is sent home. Your doctor will be able to advise if testing is necessary. Your child cannot return to school until there is a reassurance that they are well. See the Return to School Form.
What happens with the rest of the class?
Without making much of a fuss, the area around where your child sat will be cleaned. And that is that. There is no Covid 19 until it is confirmed Covid 19.
Will you let other parents know?
Other parents will not be told if a child is sent home via the isolation room or not. In the event that a case is confirmed as Covid 19 the HSE will be contacted and all advice followed.
It is really important that everyone's privacy around their health and wellbeing is respected. It is not helpful to speculate about anyone's health. The school will inform parents if a case of Covid 19 is confirmed in line with HSE advice.
